Questions We Need To Ask About Early Retirement, April 2016, Keys To Save Money.

How often is it that you plan to travel that you can't continue working? Can you work part-time at your current employer so that you can continue to have income and benefits coming in, at least until BOTH of you are at retirement age? If I were you, that's what I'd do to have an extra cushion of income and healthcare. Just imagine how much you would be able to do with the extra income? You could donate to homeless shelters, battered-women's shelters, Boys & Girls clubs, community centers in poor neighborhoods, church programs that help the poor, etc. You could invest in medical and technology companies to keep income coming in. Or, you could freelance on your own time as an income stream during retirement. The advisor is right, set a time frame to have your retirement plan decided upon.

Short Term VS Long Term Health Care, Which Saves You The Most Money? April 2016, Savings News.

If you’re one of the countless Americans who missed open enrollment last year, you might have also purchased a short-term health insurance plan to hold you over until you were able to enroll in major medical coverage again.

Short-term health insurance plans, while they do start quickly and are priced affordably, do not provide you with the benefits or levels of coverage required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). short-term insurance costs.

There are three things people who bought short-term health insurance this year should know:

 1. Short-term health plans don't protect you from tax penalties – Short-term health plans are designed to provide you with an affordable way to receive limited health coverage for short period of time when you’re not insured. But, they don’t meet all of the benefit standards of the Affordable Care Act, which means you could be subject to a tax penalty for being uninsured, even if you’re enrolled in a short-term health insurance plan.

 2. Major medical health insurance may cost less than you think – Major medical individual and family health insurance plans can be more expensive than short-term plans because they offer more benefits. But, if you earn less than 400% of the federal poverty level (about $46,000 for a single person), you MAY qualify for a subsidy to lower your costs.

 3. Open enrollment only comes around once a year, so get out there and shop - Open enrollment for ACA-compliant plans only comes around once each year. The current open enrollment period for individual and family coverage starts on November 15, 2016 and ends on February 15, 2016. If you don’t buy coverage during this period, you may be out of luck for the rest of 2016!

It is very hard to contain a cat within your back or front yard, as they keep on jumping over the fence. Our cat had grown up with a taste of outdoor freedom during the day only, so it was a very difficult adjustment for him to make to not be allowed outside by himself. Making the enclosure allows him to still go outside whenever he wants to.

Save Hundreds Every Year By Switching To LED Lights, April 2016, Financial Tips News.

No matter what you need a light bulb for, lamps, chandeliers, recessed lights, there's an LED bulb that can do the job. But what makes LEDs so great? Well for starters, they last a really long time, almost 20 years or more. So you save money not having to replace them. And since they last so long, they're perfect for those hard-to-reach places, indoors or out, saving you the hassle of trips up and down the ladder. They also save you money on your energy bill. Over the course of its 22 year lifespan, a 12 watt LED bulb will cost about $33 a year on your energy bill while a 60 watt incandescent bulb would cost you about $165 a year in energy costs. LED's also use less wattage to produce the same level of brightness that a traditional bulb would produce, allowing the same amount of light with less energy costs. Plus, LED's are mercury free making them environmentally safe. Even though they cost more than typical bulbs, the savings you get in the long run will make up for the difference. Start saving today and choose LED light bulbs. SCW

DIY Food Storage Pantry - Save Time, Save Money, Buy Bulk and Be Prepared, April 2016, Financial Tips News.

Check out this video to see how we are using some extra space under the stairs to store our bulk food and pantry items. Since we have been growing more and more of our own food we needed a good place to store it all! The SSL Family Mom has also been cooking and baking almost everything from scratch which means that we have a lot more baking supplies on hand. This space will give us a climate controlled area in our home using some extra space that was just piled with junk. After a few trips to Goodwill the space was cleared out and ready for some shelves. This will be the first in a series of videos and articles about how we are storing food here in our suburban home. The first step I am tackling today is to get the shelves put in a lay out the space to handle the size items that we will most likely be storing. In the future I will continue to work on this area and enclose it with drywall, run electric for lights and outlets, paint the shelves, seal the concrete floor, and add a small dehumidifier to keep the moisture down. The ideal conditions for dry food storage is a humidity level below 15% and temps from 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit (4-21c). The basement here in Michigan is always at about 65 degrees so we are in good shape there but the humidity is much higher in the summertime. This will be the biggest challenge and that is why I want to seal this area off from the rest of the basement and use a dehumidifier to keep the moisture levels down. That will come as a later addition as I said but for now back to getting these shelves setup! I am using all 2X4 construction for the shelf framing for a couple of reasons. This is the cheapest and most readily available type of lumber for us here and also because a 2X4 can hold quite a bit of weight if installed correctly. I probably could have used smaller lumber but in the end these shelves will be able to hold anything I can imagine putting on them. The shelves themselves are made from cheap OSB (oriented Stranded Board) for similar reasons. It is cheap and easily available here and will serve as a good solid shelf for many years. OSB does not do well in high moisture environments but since we are going for climate control here we should be ok. I am using a 16 inch deep shelf which will hold about 4 quart size mason jars as well as most of the other items that we will be storing here. The bottom shelf is the tallest to hold emergency storage buckets (either 5 or 6 gallon). The next shelf can hold any large size canning jars for juices or pickles. The next two shelves are sized for quart size jars and the top for smaller jam jars and canned goods. With this design I should be able to fit 30-60 days worth of food for our family of five.

Biking To Work Is Awesome Way To Save Money And Stay Fit, April 2016, Financial Tip News.

Biking to work is a great way to save a lot of gas money every year and stay fit. For instance, I am saving $30 a month from gas by biking to work everyday. Also it saves me a lot of time since there is major traffic and sometimes I get a parking ticket, which ups my financial loss. So...now I bike. I park my bike is a safe location within my work place, so its not outside where it can get stollen. I live in the big city, so traffic is hell, and a bike gives me the freedom I want, with a major stress reduction on the side.

1. Make sure you have a great backpack that fits all your things, lunch and water bottle.
2. Stay on the same path every day. Routine is everything and changing pathways could lose you time.
3. Always wear a helmet. Better safe than sorry.
4. Always lock your bike inside your work place. There should be zero risk of it being stollen. Don't get careless here.
5. Freshen up at work for a minute, put on that tie, brush your hair, and look the part.
5. Mostly just enjoy all the carbs you burn and rake in the health benefits.
